Department of Genetics, Microbiology and Statistics at University of Barcelona (UB)

The University of Barcelona is a public university, leader in the number of students, teaching offer, research and innovation. The Section of Genetics was founded by Antoni Prevosti, the first professor of Genetics in Spain and an International reference in the field of evolutionary and population genetics. The research of the section includes all areas of genetics: evolutionary genetics, which focuses on molecular evolution; developmental genetics, which studies the genetic basis of development; evo-devo, which identifies the mechanisms of development giving rise to evolutionary changes; human genetics, focused on the study of pathologies; biotechnology, studying living beings to obtain products of therapeutic or industrial value; and bioinformatics, transversal to all areas.

The project

Why some salamanders can regenerate the tail, starfish can regenerate their arms, and we can’t even regenerate a fingertip? You will be able to answer these questions and more in this research project studying Planarians, the champions of regeneration. In the XIX century planarians were described as "immortal under the edge of a knife" since they can regenerate any missing part (even the head!) in a few days. Are you eager to discover which genes are the key to this property? Join us and get into the regenerative world!
